Hello! I'm Bill Allison. Yes! I too was brought up on trout fishing and big game hunting in New Zealand. With over 28 years dedicated to the sport, Trout'n'Trophy have continued to provide a guided fly fishing service in the summer months and trophy hunting for the winter period. Sharing with those that have similar interests, we plan fully guided individual fishing and hunting trips for all seasons in Canterbury and Westland regions of the South Island of New Zealand.

Canadian Geese & Ducks

Our service provides for individually planned 2-5 day game bird shooting in the Central regions of the South Island.
Canterbury high country and back country provide great backdrops for a goose shoot

  • All duck and goose shoots are arranged for 2- 5 days
  • All planned shoots start and return to Christchurch
  • Accommodation used are quality B&B, Farm stay, motel or private home.
  • Group size of 4 shooters is optimum.

Game Bird species consist of  water fowl and a few upland birds, the latter being less hunted, if at all
 

Main species: Grey, Mallards, and Shoveler ducks,Black swan,Canada goose, Paradise shell duck.

Due to increasing numbers of these two game bird species, an extended bird shooting season is permitted in many South Island areas of New Zealand. This dovetails well with hunters and fishermen should they wish to add this to their activity list.
For the specialist Canada goose shooters, Central South Island New Zealand is the perfect zone.

Canada Geese are resident in New Zealand. They are are not migratory as they are in the northern hemisphere.

Shooting with some minor restrictions can be arranged at these times:

 

 

  • Canada Goose             May - November and January -April:No limits
  • Paradise shellduck    May -September and January-March: bag limit 15-20/day.
  • Ducks in general         May-July:Variable bag limits

 

 

These birds are normally hunted on farmland or pond with decoys or stalking them up in and around willowed wetlands. Good hunting will be experienced all day.

Ducks
Fish and Game offer a limited duck shooting  season - the most common being mallards, grey, shoveler, black swan, and pukeko.
General duck shooting season - May to July.

General specifications
Shotguns - side by side or under and overs 12 gauge. Ammunition: nos.2-4 shot for Geese and 4-7 shot for ducks. Non toxic shot must be used over or near water.
